Part 2 | 50 Shades of Evil: KANSAS - “BTK” Dennis Rader

0:10 Hey everyone, and welcome back to Bloody Angola. I'm your host, Jim Chapman, and today we are continuing on with the fifty Shades of Evil Kansas series and with this second episode covering BTK. Now, when I left off last episode, BTK had killed seven people, with the last being twenty five year old Nancy Fox, and this was on December eighth of nineteen seventy seven. After that murder, he wrote his first BTK letter turning the police, and a media storm ensued and then it all stopped. Nothing occurred in the cases, everything went cold, and then nearly eight years after the murder of Nancy Fox, Dennis Raider would strike again on April twenty seventh, nineteen eighty five. Now, his eighth known victim was one of the most shocking because he was somewhat familiar with this person. She just lived six doors down from Raider, and that was fifty three year old Marine Hedge. Marine Hedge was a divorced mother who was working as a secretary. She lived in Line at this time, and she had a routine that Raider knew well because he was her neighbor. He saw her all the time and it would make her very easy to stalk. On the night of the murder, Raider left a cub scout meeting he was leading, and he used an excuse he said he was feeling sick. He changed into what he called his quote hit clothes and he

1:41 drove to a bowling alley located just a short distance from Marine Hedge's home. At that point, he calls a taxi and he has the driver get just outside the neighborhood, and at that point he fakes like he's sick. He tells the driver to pull over, and then he tells him, I'll walk the rest of the way. The driver leaves, and he does indeed walk the rest of the way to her house. Now, he sneaks into that house because her car was out front, but she was not inside, so he waited, and then a little while later she arrived, but much to his surprise, she had a male visitor with him. Now at this time, he's hiding in her bedroom in her closet. After about an hour or so passes, that mail visitor leaves and she goes into her bedroom where BTK was waiting. She gets into the bed and he lets her go to sleep, and then BTK attacks her.

2:43 He binds her, he strangles her, and he eventually kills her. And after that murder, he transports her body in the trunk of her own car to a remote location in a nearby county where he poses this body and then he takes photographs of it, because now he's wanting pictures of these bodies so he can relive that experience. Right then he disposes of the body. Now, there were a lot of significant changes here from the previous crimes. First, Raider removed the body from the scene entirely, something he had not done before. He also took more risk by operating so closely to home. Marine Hedge knew him, though not well. She was aware he lived in the neighborhood and had he not killed her, had something happened and he had to leave that house for some reason before finishing the job, she knew exactly who he was, so he was taking huge risk here. And that was also one of the distinct differences between this killing and the other killings where they were further away from his home base, if you will. Also, the age was off. He deviated from these younger females. And my theory on that is you have to keep in mind a couple of those gals gave Raider a run for his money physically. They fought hard, and I would surmise he saw an older woman as less risky due to the fact that he had aged nearly a decade since the last killing. This

4:13 guy's just getting older, so Marine Hedges body was discovered days later. The investigation once again linked the crime to BTK through the binding and the strangulation and the other forensic details, but there was no link as far as DNA. It was just really police ascertaining that BTK probably did this. Now for Raider again, he just turns to normal life. He attends church, he works as a compliance officer at that time for Park City, and he raises his children, all the while knowing that he had taken the life of someone so close to his own home. Her murder further complicated any remaining sense of in the Wichita area.

5:02 It had been a while since BTK had struck and these people thought, well, maybe he was dead or maybe he was in jail. Now they realize they're not, and once again wichital is cast into fear, and this fear was real. These killings have been going on now for well over a decade. And it was common knowledge that they were all linked. Even though the police didn't say that, everyone knew in Wichital that this was a serial killer. He was going around killing these women and just mocking police with these letters, et cetera. Now, this period also coincided with raiders growing involvement in his church. He was elected president of that church council at Christ Lutheran Church, and he continued his role with the Boy Scouts, just living his best life while wreaking havoc. Behind the scenes, BTK was showing a rapidly increasing arrogance and comfort with taking risk. He'd weighed out another year before his next known killing went On September sixteenth, nineteen eighty six, he would kill twenty eight year old Vicky Weagerly. Now, Vicki was a young mother, and she was attacked in her own home in broad daylight around noon while her husband was at work. Her young son was in that house with her, and this murder, in particular, would later provide one of the most important pieces of forensic evidence in the entire BTK investigation. Vicky was a loving wife and mother.

6:36 She was living in a quiet Witchita neighborhood and she and her husband, Bill had a two year old son. His name was Brandon, and Vicki was known by everybody who knew her as having just this warm personality. She was taking piano lessons and on that Tuesday morning, she was at home practicing the piano when Raider knocked on the door. Raider was posing as a telephone repairman. He would gain entry into the home, and once inside, he would quickly overpower Vicki. He'd bound her with cord and her own pantyhose, strangled her, and sexually assaulted her dead body by masturbating onto her. Thankfully, her young two year old boy was unharmed, and it's widely considered it was only due to his gender. Now Bill weagerly the husband.

7:27 He came home for lunch, he discovers that his wife is dead. He finds his two year old son alive, and the husband calls police, and initially he's the prime suspect the police. For a long time, we're not even considering this a BTK killing. Now Raider. He would take several trophies from this home, including Vickie's driver's license. He also left behind a crucial piece of evidence, a single hair that was later matched to him through mitochondrial DNA, and that clue would become pivotal when advanced testing became available years later. So even though they didn't have the means to test that DNA at the time, they saved it and they were able to match it years later.

8:15 Now Raider was becoming increasingly bold. Yet again he would escape undetected and return to his normal routine. Now for the Weakerly family, obviously the loss was devastating. Bill Weagerly would raise their son loan and he would live with that pain and pictures in his mind of finding his wife murdered. Vicky was remembered as a talented, caring woman whose life was cut short in the safe place, the safest place she should have been, her own home now. Raider later sent a package in two thousand and four, nearly twenty years later, that included Vicky's driver's license and photos that have been taken of her body at the scene.

8:58 And this communication also would help link the case definitively to BTK. It will renew that public terror, and it would also take our husband off the suspect less and Vicki's death brought the total known victims to nine. Rader would later claim one more life before going dormant for over a decade, and that death would occur in nineteen ninety one. So on January nineteenth, nineteen ninety one, Dennis Raider committed what is believed to be his final known murder. His tenth victim was sixty two year old Dolores d. Davis, a grandmother y'all, who lived alone in a rural area near Wichitaal Now, this killing came after a long period of nothing dormancy four years later, and it showed Raiders still capable of killing even as he aged and he became more entrenched in his community. Roles Delorus Davis was kind, She was an active woman. She he enjoyed a retirement and her time with family, and she lived in a small home in Park City. Raider had been trolling that area and he selected her as his next project, kind of on a whim. He would break into her home late at night, confront her, and use those methods of binding and strangulation to kill her. He took her body from the home, placed it in the trunk of his own car, drove it to a remote location, posed her

10:29 took photographs, just like what he did to marine hedge, and he would leave her body under a bridge in Sedgwick County, where it was discovered days later. Now Raider would later admit that by the nineteen nineties his urges they got less frequent, but when they struck he would still act. He took trophies from Dolores's home and he would keep them with his growing collection of mementos from previous crimes. And with that killing, Deloris Davis victim count would reach ten with BTK. So at this point all those killings spanned from nineteen seventy four to nineteen ninety one.

11:09 His game with law enforcement in the public would extend far longer than that. However, His communications would become key. The letters, the poems, the packages, the taunts, it all became as much a part of his signature as binding and strangling people. So by early two thousand and five, more than thirty years after the first killings, the BTK case had become one of the longest unsolved serial murder investigations in American history, and Dennis Raider had grown pretty complacent in this double life. He was a respected figure on one side and an arrogant murderer on the other, and I'll give you an example of that. In two thousand and four, this asshole just could not let it go.

11:57 He had to get back in the spotlight. He won on it. Everyone to know that he was still alive and well, so he starts sending communications again. One package sent to a local TV station contained a floppy disk, and y'all, this would be the biggest mistake he ever made because even floppy disk back then you need a square bendable disc that you would put in an old computer. They have what's called metadata, So when pictures or letters are loaded onto them, that disc will make a note of where this occurred, like a location. Not only that, but Raider would use Microsoft Word to type out the letter that he loaded onto that floppy disk. And remember you register Microsoft Word with your name and all that stuff when you download it, so that floppy showed not only the location where this floppy disk was inserted, it would also show his name. When police examine that metadata, it showed that that disk the last time it was loaded in computer was loaded at Christ Lutheran Church in Wichita, and the Microsoft Word document. When they researched that and found out who it was registered to, it came up with the name Dennis. So the police they start doing some research and they figure out there's indeed a Dennis that is a church leader in that church. So police

13:31 they start surveilling secretly Dennis Rater and in the meantime, they are trying to figure out how to get DNA. Now, they can't just walk up to Rater and say, can we have your DNA because he's going to say hell no. Right, they knew that, they knew. They didn't want to walk up to his family members and ask that although they knew he had a daughter and a wife. So what do they do? Well, they figured out his daughter had been in a medical facility somewhere and some blood was drawn, and smartly, these police get a warrant for the daughter's blood and they didn't have to alert her to do that because at this time in history, familiar DNA existed.

14:14 So to get that blood, they tested and guess what to match to Dennis Writer as the father of that daughter. And it also matched blood found on the scene to Dennis Writer. So they have what they need to make an arrest, and on February twenty fifth, two thousand and five, officers indeed arrest Dennis Writer, he was driving home from work. He gets pulled over near his home in Park City, and Writer he appeared stunned, but he didn't resist officers or freak out, And when he's taken into custody, he reportedly asked if the arrest was related to a traffic warrant.

14:54 He was still playing the role of an upstanding citizen, y'all. Now, of course, as you would expect, when this ocurred, the news exploded across Wichita in the nation. Friends, neighbors, and church members were in complete shock and disbelief when they found out that it was Dennis Rader who was accused of being BTK. This was a mild mannered church leader and a family man in their view, his wife, Paula and the children. Of course, they were devastated. Now, so devastated in fact, that the same day Rader gets arrested, his wife moves out of the house and never returned. So during initial interviews, Raider was very cooperative. Over the course of several hours, he begins confessing to the ten known murders in graphic detail. He spoke with a calm, almost eerie, matter of fact tone, and it really freaked investigators out and it freaked me out when I heard this particular confession. He also referred to as victims as projects and described his rituals without any remorse. And at this point in time, one of the most feared serial killers in history, whose crimes had spanned decades, was finally in custody, and following that arrest on February twenty fifth, two thousand and five, he does get charged with ten counts of first degree murder. Now, the legal proceedings that followed were dramatic. It was everything you would think it

16:25 would be on a case like this, And on June twenty seventh, two thousand and five, Raider appeared in district Court before Judge Greg Waller for what would become one of the most memorable sentencing hearings in Kansas history. Raid surprised many by pleading guilty to all ten counts. Now there would be no lengthy trial. Instead, the court would allow him to give a detailed confession and open court and speaking in a clinical voice is the best way I can describe Rob Writer would cover each murtyr methodically, the planning, the entry into the homes, the bindings, the strangulations, and his sexual gratification at the scenes. He referred to the victims by their project numbers in open court, and he showed little, if any emotion. Here is that actual court confession.

17:24 All right, mister Raider, I need to find out more information on that particular day, the fifteenth day of January nineteen seventy four. Can you tell me where you went to kill mister Joseph Otero. Mmmm. I think it's eighteen thirty four, ititchmore? All right? Can you tell me a proximly what time of day you went there? Somewhere between seven and seven thirty. This particular location that you know these people? No, that's uh, well, that was part of my I guess my watchital fantasy. These people were selected. All right, So you.

18:13 Okay, you were engaged in some kind of fantasy during this period of time, yes, sir? All right, Now when you use the term fantasy, is this something you were doing for your personal pleasure? Sexual fantasy? Sir? I see, So you went to this residence and what occurred then? Well, I had did some thinking on what I was going to do to either missus Oterol or Josephine and basically broke into the house or didn't break into the house. But when they came out of the house, I came in in confront of the family, and then we went from there. All right.

18:55 Had you planned this beforehand to some degree? Yes, so after got in the house that I lost control of it. That it was, you know, back in my mind, I had some ideas what I was going to do, but I just I basically panic the first day. So beforehand, did you know who was there in the house. I thought Missus o'toll and the two kids, the two younger kids were in the house. I didn't realize mister or Farrell was going to be there. All right, How did you get into the house? I came to the back door, cut the phone lines, waited at the back door at reservations about even going or just walking away. But pretty soon the door opened and I was in. All right.

19:38 So the door opened. Was it opened for you? I think one of the kids, I think the junior or not junior, Yes, the the young girl, Joseph opened the door. You've probably let the dog out, because the dog is in the house at that time. All right. When you went into the house. What happened then, Well. I liked in front the family, Uh, pulled a pistol in front of mister Cheryl and asked him to you know that I was there too. Basically, I was wanted, Uh, I wanted to get the car. I was hungry food. I was wanted and asked him why down in the living room, And at that time I realized that wouldn't be a really good idea, so I finally the dog was a real problem, so I asked mister Cheryl if he could get the dog out, So he had one of the kids put it out, and then I took him back to the bedroom. You took who back the family the bedroom?

20:37 The four members are what happened then. Now at that time, I tied him up while still holding him a gunpoint well in between tying and yes, yeah. All right, after you type him up warter crew. Well, uh, they started complaining about being tied up, and I read reloosened the bonds a couple of times, tried to make mister Arrell as comfortable as I could. I currently had a cracked rib from a car accident, so I had him put a pillow down before his head. Had he put a I think he's Parker or a coat underneathing. Uh they uh, you know, they talked to me about, you know, giving the car and whatever money.

21:21 I guess they didn't have very much money. And there I realized that, you know, I was already I didn't have a mask on everything. They already could id me, and Uhde made a decision to go ahead and shut them down. I guess I'm a strangle all right. What did you do to Joseph O'to, jose O'to, Joseph Otero senior, mister O'taro, the father. I put a plastic bag over his head and then some quarts and then tighten it. M This was in the bedroom, Yes, sir, Did he in fact suffocate and die as a result of this?

22:04 Not right away, No, sir, he didn't. What happened well after that. I did miss this onto. I had never strangled anyone before, so I really didn't know how much pressure you had to put on a person or how long. It would take. But was she also tied up there in Yes? Yeah, both their hands and their feet were tied up. She was on the bed. Where were the children, Well, Josephine was on the bed and Junior was on the floor. This time, so we're talking first of all about Joseph Otero. So you had put the bag over his head and tied it that he did not die right away? Can you tell me what happened in regards to Joseph.

22:46 He moved over real quick like, and I think he tore a hole in the bag, and I could tell that he was All those there that at that time the whole family just went They went panicked on me. So I worked pretty clear, well, you work pretty quick well. I mean I I strangled missus o'taro and then she went out or passed out. I thought she was dead. She passed out. Then I strangled uh Josephine. She passed out or I thought she was dead. And uh. Then I went over and put a uh, and then put a bag on Junior said, and and then uh, I remember right, Uh, missus o'toll came back. She came back and uh.

23:36 Certainly he asked me about Joseph oterot Senior headed he had torn a hole in the bag, what to do with him? Then I put another bag over or either that or a I recollect. I think I put a either a cloth or a T shirt or something over it over his head, and then a bag another bag and him did he subsequently die, well, yes, I mean, I mean I was. I didn't just stay there and watch him that. I was moving around the room. But all right, so you indicated you strangled missus o'toll after you had done this, is that correct? Now I went back and strangled her again and that finally killed her at that time.

24:20 So this is in regards to count too. He first of all put the bag over Joseph Otaro's head and he tore a hold of the bag. Then you went ahead, did you strangled missus o'taro? Then okay, did you go well? First of all, mister o'taroll was strangled or a bag put over his head and strangled. Then I thought he was going down, and I went over and strangled missus o'taro. I thought she was down. Then I strangled Josephine thought she was down, and then I went over to Junior and put the bag on his head. After that, missus o'taro walked back up, and you know she was pretty upset.

25:03 What's going on? So I came back and uh, at that point in time, strangled her for the death. Strangle at that time with your hands or no, with a court, with a with a rope and then I, uh, I think at that point in time, I redid mister O'taroll, put the bag over his head, went over and then to Junior. Before that she asked me to to save her sons, so I actually had taken a bag off and then I was really upset at that point in time. So basically, when mister Teraroll was down, missus Otto was down, I went ahead and took Junior and put another bag over his head and took him to the other bedroom.

Put a bag of his head to put a cloth over his head, a T shirt and bag so he couldn't tear a hole in it, and he such some point died from that, And then I went back. Josephine had well back up. What did you do? Then? I took her to the basement and eventually huged her. Are you hung her in the facement? Yes, sir? Did you do anything else at that time? Yes? I had some sexual fantasies, but that was after she was hung. All right, what did you do? Then? Let's do the house kind of cleaned it up. It's called the right hand rule. You go from room and room pick care of things up. I think I took mister Otaroll's watch there. I guess I took a radio.

In fact, I had the keys I think earlier before that, because I want to make sure I had a way of getting out of the house and clean the house up a little bit, make sure everything's packed up, and left through the front door. And they went there, went over to their car, and then drove over to Dylan's, left the car there, and then eventually walked back to my far. All right, now, sir, from what you have just said, I take it that the facts you've told me apply to both counts one, all of counts one, two, three, and four.

27:26 Is that correct? And yes, sir, now, mister. Raider, yes, and that is originally I believe he indicated eighteen thirty four edge one and the address was actually eight o three edge. Allright, but i'd ask you for the curtain said we count Yes, man, he's a case of what had happened. I don't believe the exact address is importance a right, mister Raider. We will now turn to count five. In that count, it is claimed that honor about the fourth day of April nineteen seventy four, Cedric County, Kansas said you unlawfully killed Catherine Bright maliciously, wilfully, deliberately, and with premeditation by stananulation and stabbing, inflicting injuries from which she did die on April fourth, nineteen seventy four. Can you tell me what occurred on that.

28:27 Day off the I don't know how exactly say that. I had many what I call them projects. They were different people in the town that I followed, watched. Kathleen Brien was one of the next targets. I guess this might would indicate how did you select her? Just driving by one day and I saw her go in the house with somebody else, and I thought that's a possibility. There was many many places in the area, collychill, They're all over which tall any way, that's it just was basically a selection process worked toward it. If it didn't work, I'd just move on to something else in the In the my kind of person is stocking and strolling. You go through the trolling stage and then the stocking stage.

29:13 She was in the stocking stage when this happened. All right, So so you identified Catherine Bright as a potential Yes, sir, what did you do here in Sedrick County? Then? Pardon, what did you do then here in Cedric County. On this particular day. Yes, I broke into the house and waited for her to come home. How did you break into the house through the back door on the east side? All right, and you waited for her to come home? Where did you wait. In the house there? Probably close to the vedroom. I walked to the house and kind of figured out where I'd be if they came through. All right. What happened? Then? She and Kevin Bright came in. I wasn't expecting him to be there and come find out, I guess they were really that time. I approached him and told him I was wanted in California, needed some car, basically the same thing that I told the Tartos, kind of ease and make them feel better, and proceeded to I think I had him tie I think I had him tiger up first, and then I tied him up or vice versa.

30:21 I don't remember right now. But let me ask. You indicated that you had some items to tie these people with. Did you bring these items, both the old tarts with this tartles? I did. I'm not really sure on the brights. There was some when I had working with the police, there was some controversy on that. Probably more likely I did. But if if I had brought my stuff and used my stuff, Kevin would probably be dead today. I'm not bragging on that. It's just a matter of fact. It's the bonds I tied him up with that he brokeen so meant and maybe the same way with same with Katherine.

Okay, I moved U well after I really can't remember judge whether I had her tie him up or she tied him up, but anyway, I moved. Basically, I moved her to another bedroom and he was already secure there by the bit tied his feet to the bedpost with one bedpost that he couldn't run, kind of tied her in the other bedroom. And then it came back to strangled him, and at that time we had a fight. Were you armed with a handgun at that time? Oh? Yes, I had a handgun. What happened when I actually had two handguns? Well, when I started strangling, either the garran broke or he broke his bonds, and he jumped up her quick leg I pulled my gun and quickly shot it hit him in the head. He fell over.

32:03 I could see the blood, and as far as I sarned it, you know, I thought he was down and was out, and then left and started to strangle Catherine. And then we started fighting, because bonds were very good, and so after forth we fought you and Catherine. Yeah, we fought, and I got the best of her, and I thought she was going down, and then I could hear some movement in the other room. So I went back and Kevin. No, no, I thought she was going down, and I went back to the other bedroom where Kevin was at and I tried to re strangle him at that time, and he jumped up and we fought, and and he about at that time about shot me because he got the other my pistol that was in my shoulder.

32:50 I had my magnum in my shoulder. So do you having a shoulder hold, Yes, And I had a magnum of a shoulder holster. The other one was the twenty two, and we fought at that point time and I thought it was going to go off. I jammed the gun, stuck my finger in the in there, jammed it, and I think he thought that was the only guy I had, because once I either Betty's finger or hit him or something got away. And I used the twenty two and shot him one more time, and I thought he was down for good at that time. All right, so you shot him a second time? Yes, sir? What happened? Then I went back to. Finished the job on Catherine and she was fighting, and at that point in time I've been fighting her. I just and then I heard some I don't know whether I was basically lose some control. The strangulation wasn't working on her, and I used a knife on her.

33:46 You say you used a knife on her? What did you do with the knie? I stabbed her? She said, you stabled two or three times either here or here, maybe two back here in one here or maybe just two times, Bagger, You were pointed to your lower back and your Yeah, underneath the ribs and your lower after them and underneath the ribs up unfeath the ribs. So after you stabbed or what happened? Uh? Actually, I think at that point in time, well, it's a total mess because I didn't have control on it. She was bleeding, she went down. I think I just went back to check on Kevin or at that basically the same time I heard him escape. It could be one of the two. But all of a sudden, the front door of the house was opened and he was gone.

34:32 And oh, I tell you what I thought. I thought the police were coming at that time. I heard the door open. I thought that's it, and I stepped out there and me I could see him running down the street. So I quickly cleaned up everything that I could and left. All right, No, mister raider, you indicated that Feo Tarrells you did not have a mask done. Did you have a mask done at the Biden? No? No, I did, all right? So what happened? Then? I tried? I had already had the keys to the uh, and I thought I had the right key to the right car. I ran after their car. I think it was a pick up up there, and I tried and did more, and at that point in time I was he was gone running down the street. I thought, yeah, I'm in trouble. So I tried. It didn't work, so I just took off run, went down, went east, and then worked back towards the WSU campus where my car was part.

35:23 All right, so you had parked your car to Wichita State University campus. How far away were was the Bright resident? Oh? I parked? Was that thirteenth and there? Let's see there they were on thirteenth? Was it seventeenth? Yeah? I was fir I was just about one block south of seventeenth where the car was. There, there's a park there. I parked for that park, and then I walked to thirteenth to the Bright's residents. So I basically ran back. All right, So you were able to get to your car and get away. Yes, sir, let's turn to count number six in that count. They claim, on March seventeenth, nineteen seventy seventh, in Cedric County, Kansas, that you unlawfully killed Shirley by Anne maliciously, willfully, deliberately, and with premeditation by strangulation, inflicting injuries from which she did die on March seventeenth, nineteen seventy seventh. Can you tell me what he did on that?

36:22 Though? As before, ran was a actually on that one, she was completely random. There was actually someone cross from Dylan's was a potential target. It was called Project Green. I think I had project numbers and assigned with it. And the fickle day, I drove to Dylan's, parked in the parking lot, watched this particular residence, and then got out of the car and walked over to it's probably the police support the address. I don't remember the dress now knocked nobody answered it, so I was all teed up, So I just started going through the I've been into the neighborhood before. I kind of knew a little little the layout of the neighborhood. I've been through the back alleys, knew for some certain people lived. While I was walking down Hydraulic, I met a young one and asked him if I decent pictures, kind of as a russ I guess or roost as you call it, and how to feel it out. And saw where he went. And I went to another address and knocked in the door. Nobody opened the door, so I just noticed where he went and went to that house and we went from there.

37:34 Now you call these projects, uh, with these sexual fantasies. Also potential hits in my world, that's what I called them, all right, projects hits? All right? And why did you have these potential hits? Was this ratify some sexual interest? Yes, sir, I had there. I had a lot of them. So it's just one didn't work out and just moved to another one. All right, So as I'm to understand it, Then on the seventeenth of March nineteen seventy seven, you saw this little boy go into a residence, and you tried another residence. Someone was there. Anyway, I went back out through the keys, checked the car with quick like through keys, up on top of the roof to the Kirk house, walked from her car back to my car, took my car, drove it back, and I either dropped more stuff off or I picked her up and put them in my car. And then I drove up northeast of Sefolk County and dropped her off

So on August eighteenth of two thousand and five, Judge Waller sentences Radar to ten consecutive wife sentences, the maximum possible under Kansas law. At the time, it amounted to one hundred and seventy five years without the possibility of parole, and the judge would describe Raider's crimes as the most heinous he had ever encountered, and Raider again showed little reaction during the sentencing, he actually thanked the judge and he gets led away. His wife, Paula, would file for divorce shortly afterward, and that divorce was granted. And since his sentencing in August of two thousand and five, Dennis Writer has been serving ten consecutive life sentences at the El Dorado Correctional Facility. This is in Kansas, and he's still alive, believe it or not. Now in his eighties, he has housed in a high security unit. He's obviously isolated from general population due.

And Raider has granted occasional interviews over the year, often attempting to present himself as cooperative or even insightful about his own psychology. Now, personally, I think there's more victims, and I think the reason that Raider doesn't want to admit to two specific killings in particular that took place that he has drawings of very similar people or similar looking people is number one,

But second, one of those murders in particular, he is highly suspected of having committed took place in a neighboring state that does have the death penalty. He faces the risk of being put to death in that state. Now, as far as his family, his ex wife Paula, has maintained a very low profile. His children, Brian and Carrey. They've had to navigate life with the knowledge of knowing your dad was a serial killer and having this infamous image to the public.
