50 Shades of Evil: Nevada - Thomas Randolph

50 Shades of Evil: Nevada - Thomas Randolph

Thomas Randolph called 911 on the night of May 8, 2008, from his Las Vegas home with a chilling story: he and his sixth wife, Sharon Causse, had just returned from a date when a masked intruder shot her in the head. Randolph claimed he then killed the intruder in self-defense. The dead man turned out to be Michael Miller, a handyman Randolph knew. Investigators quickly saw problems with the scene and the story.

Prosecutors later argued Randolph had hired Miller to kill Sharon so he could collect hundreds of thousands of dollars in life insurance, then shot Miller to eliminate the only witness and stage the whole thing as a heroic act of self-defense. It was a calculated double murder dressed up as a random home invasion. What made the case even darker was Randolph’s history. He had been married six times, and four of his wives were dead by the time he was arrested.

One earlier wife in Utah, Becky Gault, had also died from a gunshot wound in circumstances that raised suspicions; Randolph was tried and acquitted in that case years earlier. The pattern—marriages, insurance policies, and untimely deaths—earned him the nickname “the Black Widower.” The road to conviction was long and complicated. Randolph was found guilty in 2017 and sentenced to death, but the Nevada Supreme Court overturned the verdict because jurors had heard evidence from the earlier Utah case. At his 2023 retrial, with that prior-act evidence barred, a second jury still convicted him of conspiracy to commit murder and two counts of first-degree murder. In 2024 he was sentenced to 60 years to life. He continues to maintain his innocence.

I'm here for.

00:02:03.260 --> 00:02:07.560
get into another Fifty Shades of Evil episode. And we're

17
00:02:07.609 --> 00:02:10.879
going to Las Vegas for this one at a modest

18
00:02:10.969 --> 00:02:15.930
home where on May 8th of 2008, a 911 call

19
00:02:15.969 --> 00:02:19.610
was placed and a husband found his wife dead in

20
00:02:19.629 --> 00:02:23.050
a hallway. A man in a ski mask was also

21
00:02:23.110 --> 00:02:26.990
dead on the floor and the husband, still breathing, tells

22
00:02:27.270 --> 00:02:31.189
the dispatcher he just survived a home invasion. His name

23
00:02:31.270 --> 00:02:37.300
is Thomas Randolph Jr. He was born in 1955 in Fairfield, Illinois.

24
00:02:37.620 --> 00:02:41.060
And of the six wives that he has married in

25
00:02:41.099 --> 00:02:45.460
his lifetime, four of them were dead. He became known

26
00:02:45.860 --> 00:02:48.780
as the Black Widower Man. And today we're going to

27
00:02:48.800 --> 00:02:52.710
break down his crimes, sentences, and some pretty shocking events

28
00:02:52.789 --> 00:02:56.419
that took place in between. So let's get into it.

29
00:02:56.590 --> 00:02:59.050
And we're going to start out in that hallway. It's

30
00:02:59.129 --> 00:03:01.930
the evening, and he and his wife Sharon, they had

31
00:03:02.069 --> 00:03:06.250
just come back from celebrating Mother's Day earlier that evening

32
00:03:06.550 --> 00:03:09.969
at a Las Vegas casino. They go inside their home.

33
00:03:10.460 --> 00:03:16.259
Minutes later, this 911 call is received by Las Vegas Dispatch.

34
00:03:17.949 --> 00:03:20.610
What's your name? What's your name?

35
00:03:21.310 --> 00:03:23.409
We're going to be a wife and a house.

36
00:03:42.879 --> 00:03:44.939
She's been, like, in the hall in the bedroom.

37
00:03:44.979 --> 00:03:46.099
She's been shot bad.

38
00:03:46.120 --> 00:03:47.060
Where did she.

39
00:03:46.960 --> 00:03:48.189
Shot at, do you know?

40
00:03:48.250 --> 00:03:52.409
Yeah, I think in the head.

41
00:03:52.569 --> 00:03:54.050
I can't remember what we started doing.

42
00:03:54.289 --> 00:03:56.710
It's an art film. I don't know what they do

43
00:03:56.810 --> 00:03:57.289
in that room.

44
00:03:57.949 --> 00:04:00.810
And is the guy still in the house, do you know?

45
00:04:00.849 --> 00:04:02.770
No, he's in the garage.

46
00:04:02.810 --> 00:04:04.729
He pushed me by and ran on out.

47
00:04:04.849 --> 00:04:05.310
I know.

48
00:04:05.349 --> 00:04:06.629
He was ripping me off.

49
00:04:06.689 --> 00:04:10.819
He started ripping me off. Do you know what his

50
00:04:10.860 --> 00:04:11.300
name is?

51
00:04:13.750 --> 00:04:17.610
So you hear in that call, this husband, he seems panicked.

52
00:04:17.889 --> 00:04:21.360
His claim was he walked into the house and he

53
00:04:21.459 --> 00:04:25.620
found Sharon shot. He grabbed his gun, saw a man

54
00:04:25.680 --> 00:04:28.750
in the garage area with a ski mask on. He

55
00:04:28.819 --> 00:04:32.139
shoots the man and kills him on its face. This

56
00:04:32.240 --> 00:04:37.209
seemed like a textbook case of self-defense. Now, the man

57
00:04:37.389 --> 00:04:41.529
under that ski mask was 38-year-old Michael Miller, who was

58
00:04:41.589 --> 00:04:45.170
a handyman and no stranger to Thomas Randolph. As a

59
00:04:45.209 --> 00:04:49.439
matter of fact, the investigation would reveal they not only

60
00:04:49.620 --> 00:04:53.839
knew each other, they had exchanged hundreds of texts with

61
00:04:53.899 --> 00:04:58.149
each other over the preceding months. Prosecutors would later say

62
00:04:58.329 --> 00:05:01.990
it was a conspiracy that Randolph hired Miller to kill

63
00:05:02.029 --> 00:05:07.069
his wife to collect a $ 300, 000 insurance policy and that

64
00:05:07.110 --> 00:05:13.560
he double-crossed Miller by killing him immediately following Miller killing

65
00:05:13.600 --> 00:05:16.439
his wife. Now, the police at this time, they were

66
00:05:16.519 --> 00:05:19.879
not far enough into the investigation on this night to

67
00:05:19.920 --> 00:05:22.689
figure all of that out. So, there was no arrest,

68
00:05:22.850 --> 00:05:27.230
just an informal interview to get Thomas Randolph's statement regarding

69
00:05:27.269 --> 00:05:30.449
the altercation and the shooting. Now, a little bit about

70
00:05:30.509 --> 00:05:33.149
Thomas Randolph. As I said, he was born in 1955

71
00:05:33.149 --> 00:05:37.759
in Fairfield, Illinois, and he grew up wanting to be

72
00:05:37.800 --> 00:05:40.879
a drummer. He had really long hair, kind of looked

73
00:05:40.939 --> 00:05:43.839
like a rocker type, and he was... not what you

74
00:05:43.879 --> 00:05:48.370
would consider an upstanding citizen. He would work odd jobs

75
00:05:48.550 --> 00:05:51.930
as he went into adulthood. He would be a small-time

76
00:05:51.970 --> 00:05:55.589
drug dealer, kind of ran with a rough crowd. And

77
00:05:55.810 --> 00:05:59.829
in 1975, he gets married to a woman by the

78
00:05:59.870 --> 00:06:04.560
name of Catherine Thomas. Now, he and Catherine, they met

79
00:06:04.689 --> 00:06:09.160
through mutual friends while she was still a high school senior.

80
00:06:09.300 --> 00:06:13.189
He was a roommate of one of her friend's boyfriend.

81
00:06:13.490 --> 00:06:20.259
On August 2nd of 1975, the 18-year-old Thomas married the

82
00:06:20.279 --> 00:06:25.000
20-year-old Randolph, and they would have two children, Krista and Justice,

83
00:06:25.300 --> 00:06:28.899
which is an ironic name. Now, she described Randolph as

84
00:06:28.980 --> 00:06:34.120
initially charming, witty, intelligent, but the marriage, it had become

85
00:06:34.160 --> 00:06:40.170
controlling and psychologically abusive. Not physically violent, although some say

86
00:06:40.670 --> 00:06:44.839
Mental abuse can be even worse than physical abuse. She

87
00:06:44.920 --> 00:06:49.579
said he isolated her from her friends. He was very unfaithful.

88
00:06:49.990 --> 00:06:53.910
He both used and sold drugs and once threw a

89
00:06:53.970 --> 00:06:57.500
bowl of oatmeal at the wall because it lacked sugar.

90
00:06:57.560 --> 00:07:00.540
And she told that. to demonstrate how quick of a

91
00:07:00.600 --> 00:07:04.019
fuse that he had. He owned guns and a lot

92
00:07:04.139 --> 00:07:06.670
of them, and that kind of frightened her. She said

93
00:07:06.709 --> 00:07:09.089
at one point he took out a life insurance policy,

94
00:07:09.170 --> 00:07:13.100
which made her even more nervous. And when she decided

95
00:07:13.160 --> 00:07:17.589
to leave, she recalled his face turning red with anger.

96
00:07:17.689 --> 00:07:23.310
They would divorce in 1983 because she had enough. Get this.

97
00:07:23.949 --> 00:07:28.250
The same day that divorce was finalized, Randolph, he gets

98
00:07:28.310 --> 00:07:32.079
married again to his second wife, And her name was

99
00:07:32.160 --> 00:07:36.740
Becky Galt. Now, after the divorce, Catherine, in her own right,

100
00:07:36.879 --> 00:07:39.680
she married a guy by the name of Steve Thomas,

101
00:07:39.860 --> 00:07:43.339
who was a former friend of Randolph's. And Steve would

102
00:07:43.420 --> 00:07:48.420
say many years later to investigators that Randolph had asked

103
00:07:48.459 --> 00:07:52.459
him multiple times if he would kill someone for money

104
00:07:52.939 --> 00:07:54.579
if he could get away with it. And he said,

105
00:07:54.660 --> 00:07:58.310
looking back, I'm pretty sure he was kind of trying

106
00:07:58.329 --> 00:08:01.519
to groom me to see if I will be willing

107
00:08:01.600 --> 00:08:05.779
to kill Catherine. But it was all hindsight years later

108
00:08:05.980 --> 00:08:09.990
after many things would come out on this guy. Now,

109
00:08:10.060 --> 00:08:13.670
let's get back to the marriage story. between Randolph and

110
00:08:13.730 --> 00:08:18.819
Becky Galt. Becky was born on December 28th of 1956.

111
00:08:18.819 --> 00:08:22.079
She was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, and she

112
00:08:22.160 --> 00:08:25.899
had a pretty large family. She had two brothers and

113
00:08:25.959 --> 00:08:29.350
a sister, a bunch of family and friends, and they

114
00:08:29.439 --> 00:08:33.649
all would describe her as vibrant, compassionate, and fun-loving. And

115
00:08:33.710 --> 00:08:37.639
she met Thomas Randolph while he was still married to

116
00:08:37.679 --> 00:08:41.470
Catherine Thomas, the relationship, it would come out later on,

117
00:08:41.590 --> 00:08:44.629
had started off as an affair. Remember, on the same

118
00:08:44.690 --> 00:08:48.529
day he divorced one, or the divorce was finalized, he

119
00:08:48.610 --> 00:08:54.139
ended up marrying his second wife. Now, that marriage was short-lasting.

120
00:08:54.159 --> 00:08:57.220
It only lasted a little over three years, and accounts

121
00:08:57.259 --> 00:09:01.860
from family members describe a relationship marked by controlling behavior,

122
00:09:02.460 --> 00:09:07.600
isolation from family and friends, financial problems, and drug use,

123
00:09:07.740 --> 00:09:12.539
including cocaine. Sound familiar? Sounds exactly like his first marriage.

124
00:09:12.679 --> 00:09:16.590
Becky's loved one said she'd become fearful of Randolph and

125
00:09:16.620 --> 00:09:19.809
was planning to leave him, exactly like his first wife.

126
00:09:20.370 --> 00:09:26.230
Catherine Thomas, Randolph's first wife, actually later testified Becky called

127
00:09:26.289 --> 00:09:30.539
her to ask her for advice when these arguments were

128
00:09:30.850 --> 00:09:34.129
started to escalate. How about that? You're calling the first

129
00:09:34.230 --> 00:09:38.269
wife to get advice. And Catherine urged her to leave

130
00:09:38.309 --> 00:09:42.740
him and offered help to her. Becky was reportedly staying

131
00:09:42.779 --> 00:09:47.440
with relatives and returned to her and Randolph's home to

132
00:09:47.500 --> 00:09:51.360
retrieve some belongings just prior to her death. So let's

133
00:09:51.399 --> 00:09:56.250
go to the night of November 6th and 7th of 1986. Randolph,

134
00:09:56.289 --> 00:10:01.710
he gets arrested for driving erratically in the Clearfields. Utah area.

135
00:10:01.909 --> 00:10:05.429
Police find a bottle of vodka in that car and

136
00:10:05.460 --> 00:10:08.000
he spends the night in jail for that. Now the

137
00:10:08.039 --> 00:10:10.720
next morning, which is November 7th of 1986, he gets

138
00:10:10.740 --> 00:10:19.549
released from jail. He returns home. And suddenly, he calls 911.

139
00:10:19.549 --> 00:10:24.860
He reported finding his 29-year-old wife, Becky, dead in their

140
00:10:24.940 --> 00:10:30.220
bed from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Police arrive.

141
00:10:30.440 --> 00:10:33.559
They confirm that. She's indeed dead with a gun in

142
00:10:33.600 --> 00:10:37.600
her hand. There's a suicide note in the room. And

143
00:10:37.879 --> 00:10:41.850
the wound was a contact shot to the right temple

144
00:10:42.169 --> 00:10:46.879
with an exit wound. Now, gunshot residue was reported on

145
00:10:46.940 --> 00:10:51.399
a right hand in the Clearfield Police Department and medical examiner,

146
00:10:51.879 --> 00:10:56.159
they initially ruled this death a suicide. Randolph told police

147
00:10:56.240 --> 00:11:00.019
that Becky had threatened a suicide just the day before

148
00:11:00.279 --> 00:11:03.009
after he refused to take her to Salt Lake City

149
00:11:03.129 --> 00:11:08.230
for cocaine and said they both struggled with drug use. But,

150
00:11:09.029 --> 00:11:13.529
Within about 13 days of her death, Randolph, he does

151
00:11:13.610 --> 00:11:20.580
collect a $ 250, 000 life insurance payout, naming him as the beneficiary.

152
00:11:20.940 --> 00:11:24.580
And he used that money in part for purchases, including

153
00:11:24.600 --> 00:11:29.429
a Porsche and homes. And Becky's family and friends, they

154
00:11:29.529 --> 00:11:33.340
dispute that. those suicide findings, and I was surprised to

155
00:11:33.389 --> 00:11:37.379
see personally that an insurance policy actually paid out on

156
00:11:37.419 --> 00:11:42.299
a suicide. I've never heard of that, but obviously they exist.

157
00:11:43.279 --> 00:11:48.350
So that case remained closed as a suicide until roughly

158
00:11:48.500 --> 00:11:51.570
two years later when a former friend, a guy by

159
00:11:51.610 --> 00:11:55.669
the name of Eric Tarantino, he comes forward and he

160
00:11:55.730 --> 00:11:59.100
tells police, hold up a minute, I don't think that

161
00:11:59.120 --> 00:12:04.419
this woman committed suicide because Randolph tried to recruit me

162
00:12:04.820 --> 00:12:08.679
to kill Becky. And it was basically a scheme so

163
00:12:08.700 --> 00:12:12.889
we could both collect life insurance money. According to his

164
00:12:13.129 --> 00:12:17.970
testimony in court later on, when they reversed this decision.

165
00:12:18.730 --> 00:12:21.330
and decide to charge him with murder. He said they

166
00:12:21.389 --> 00:12:25.350
discussed and rehearsed multiple methods over about a year's time,

167
00:12:25.490 --> 00:12:31.379
including staging a burglary, drowning, a hunting accident, a bathtub fall,

168
00:12:31.960 --> 00:12:35.799
all these scenarios to make it look accidental or make

169
00:12:35.840 --> 00:12:39.379
it look like a suicide. Tarantino was to receive a

170
00:12:39.539 --> 00:12:43.159
share of the money received from the life insurance and

171
00:12:43.610 --> 00:12:46.269
And Tarantino said when he refused to do this, he

172
00:12:46.350 --> 00:12:49.409
said he and Becky had become kind of tight and

173
00:12:49.450 --> 00:12:53.549
he just couldn't make himself do this. Randolph allegedly beat

174
00:12:53.590 --> 00:12:58.269
him severely enough to hospitalize him. Tarantino said he fled

175
00:12:58.629 --> 00:13:02.840
Utah to California. out of fear. So as I said,

176
00:13:02.960 --> 00:13:06.340
Randolph was arrested for that. That was on December 8th

177
00:13:06.379 --> 00:13:11.779
of 1988. He's charged with first degree murder, which carries

178
00:13:11.799 --> 00:13:17.159
a possible death penalty and a related insurance fraud charge.

179
00:13:17.279 --> 00:13:21.549
Prosecutors argued he staged the suicide for the payout and

180
00:13:21.570 --> 00:13:25.210
that he had gotten himself arrested the night before as

181
00:13:25.269 --> 00:13:28.570
an alibi to all of this. Now he's sitting in jail.

182
00:13:29.289 --> 00:13:33.389
And he does something else really stupid. While awaiting trial,

183
00:13:33.940 --> 00:13:39.559
Randolph attempted to arrange the killing of Tarantino so that

184
00:13:39.659 --> 00:13:42.039
he could not testify. And the way he did this

185
00:13:42.220 --> 00:13:44.340
was there was a guy in the cell next to him.

186
00:13:44.919 --> 00:13:48.309
And he would communicate with this guy. And he offers

187
00:13:48.830 --> 00:13:53.889
money for this guy to kill Tarantino. And this guy

188
00:13:54.149 --> 00:13:58.830
turned out to be an undercover cop. They figured something

189
00:13:58.870 --> 00:14:02.409
like this may happen with Randolph. So when he did that,

190
00:14:02.649 --> 00:14:09.409
it led to separate conspiracy charges. So in April of 1989,

191
00:14:09.409 --> 00:14:14.350
after a multi-day trial in Utah, a jury deliberates about

192
00:14:14.509 --> 00:14:19.669
five hours. And get this, they acquit Randolph of murder

193
00:14:19.960 --> 00:14:24.460
and the insurance fraud charge. The defense argued it was

194
00:14:24.500 --> 00:14:28.009
a clear suicide by a depressed woman with a history

195
00:14:28.029 --> 00:14:32.570
of drug problems. The prosecution in this case relied heavily

196
00:14:32.669 --> 00:14:35.809
on Tarantino's account of the plot. And the problem was

197
00:14:36.049 --> 00:14:40.159
the medical evidence really didn't say what happened one way

198
00:14:40.200 --> 00:14:42.820
or the other. They just didn't have the evidence at

199
00:14:42.860 --> 00:14:45.980
the end of the day. So he gets out of that.

200
00:14:46.179 --> 00:14:48.789
He gets acquitted. And now I'm going to take you

201
00:14:48.809 --> 00:14:56.230
to March of 1994 and Randolph's third wife, Leona Stapleton. Now,

202
00:14:56.450 --> 00:15:00.809
this is the least scrutinized of any of Thomas's marriages

203
00:15:01.210 --> 00:15:04.019
because the cause of death was clear. It was cancer

204
00:15:04.519 --> 00:15:07.659
and it was well after their divorce. They were only

205
00:15:07.720 --> 00:15:11.769
married 11 months later. In public information on this case,

206
00:15:11.929 --> 00:15:15.929
very limited because there was no case, Randolph had described

207
00:15:16.009 --> 00:15:20.220
Leona as a fun, good person and beautiful. In interviews,

208
00:15:20.279 --> 00:15:22.960
he called her an island girl, said she liked to party,

209
00:15:23.039 --> 00:15:26.990
and claimed she sometimes forgot to come home. He also

210
00:15:27.070 --> 00:15:30.309
stated she was the smarter one who figured out really

211
00:15:30.389 --> 00:15:33.990
quickly he was having affairs with other women. And one

212
00:15:34.049 --> 00:15:37.710
report that I came across said the divorce occurred after

213
00:15:37.809 --> 00:15:42.049
she uncovered some of those affairs. Regardless of that, they

214
00:15:42.090 --> 00:15:47.750
divorce in 1995. She dies 11 years later in 2006

215
00:15:47.750 --> 00:15:51.909
from liver cancer, from what I read. Unrelated as far

216
00:15:51.990 --> 00:15:56.059
as anything he likely had anything to do with. So,

217
00:15:56.100 --> 00:15:59.940
let's go to his fourth wife, Gayna Allman. Now, she

218
00:16:00.120 --> 00:16:04.309
is still alive today. She's originally from Indiana, and she

219
00:16:04.350 --> 00:16:08.610
had previously been divorced and was re-entering the dating scene,

220
00:16:08.669 --> 00:16:13.610
and this is in the mid-1990s. In the mid-1990s, they

221
00:16:13.629 --> 00:16:17.850
didn't have Batch.com or any of these apps. She actually

222
00:16:17.929 --> 00:16:22.840
met Randolph through a newspaper personal ad. Back in those days,

223
00:16:23.139 --> 00:16:27.000
she had described him as initially charming and attentive. He

224
00:16:27.039 --> 00:16:29.960
would buy her flowers. He would say all the things

225
00:16:29.980 --> 00:16:32.720
that she wanted to hear. And he treated her well.

226
00:16:33.019 --> 00:16:36.299
And she said because of that, the courtship moved quickly.

227
00:16:36.820 --> 00:16:41.919
And they get married in October of 1995. And keep

228
00:16:42.000 --> 00:16:46.710
in mind, this dude divorced his previous wife to her

229
00:16:47.009 --> 00:16:50.029
in 1995. So he gets divorced and he gets married

230
00:16:50.070 --> 00:16:56.429
within months. back-to-back during these occasions. Now, shortly afterward, Randolph

231
00:16:56.490 --> 00:17:00.450
takes out a life insurance policy on her. Gayna later

232
00:17:00.590 --> 00:17:03.929
noted other early red flags. She said he was very

233
00:17:04.000 --> 00:17:07.500
controlling in his behavior, and she said he would huff

234
00:17:07.799 --> 00:17:12.539
household products to get high. She said guns were throughout

235
00:17:12.599 --> 00:17:17.000
the home, and she said his temper could surface over

236
00:17:17.119 --> 00:17:21.609
minor disagreements. Y'all see pattern here with every single one

237
00:17:21.630 --> 00:17:24.930
of these people that have married this guy. Now, she

238
00:17:24.970 --> 00:17:29.319
had no idea about the stuff going on with Randolph

239
00:17:29.859 --> 00:17:34.039
since their divorce. She didn't even know all the stuff

240
00:17:34.079 --> 00:17:36.380
going on with these other women, that he had one

241
00:17:36.460 --> 00:17:41.650
wife die, any of those things. And subsequently, in the future,

242
00:17:41.809 --> 00:17:44.710
she didn't know about any of that. But police, when

243
00:17:44.750 --> 00:17:49.190
they're investigating... The most recent case involving this guy, they

244
00:17:49.230 --> 00:17:52.799
go to her and they say, hey, do you know

245
00:17:52.880 --> 00:17:58.839
anything about if Thomas Randolph could be a killer? And

246
00:17:59.240 --> 00:18:02.460
she said, no, I don't know anything about that. And

247
00:18:02.539 --> 00:18:05.549
they basically told her, well, we talked to a guy

248
00:18:05.589 --> 00:18:10.309
by the name of Glenn Morrison and Randolph actually used

249
00:18:10.369 --> 00:18:14.289
to talk to him when y'all were married about killing you.

250
00:18:14.890 --> 00:18:18.250
He wanted to hire this guy. And this was a

251
00:18:18.529 --> 00:18:23.170
shocking revelation to this lady. She did tell police the

252
00:18:23.230 --> 00:18:26.650
reason she and Randolph got divorced was because he pointed

253
00:18:26.690 --> 00:18:29.640
a gun at her head during an argument. And she

254
00:18:29.740 --> 00:18:32.920
also told police about an incident where he was cleaning

255
00:18:33.079 --> 00:18:37.150
guns at their dining room table. She said the weapon

256
00:18:37.269 --> 00:18:41.069
discharged and a bullet went through the wall right by

257
00:18:41.170 --> 00:18:44.569
where she was sitting. She said she always believed it

258
00:18:44.630 --> 00:18:47.710
wasn't an accident. He claimed the gun accidentally went off

259
00:18:47.970 --> 00:18:50.829
and she believed he had tried to kill her. She

260
00:18:50.910 --> 00:18:54.049
said she waited until he went to work, packed her shit,

261
00:18:54.430 --> 00:18:59.569
quit her job, and left, essentially going into hiding until

262
00:18:59.609 --> 00:19:04.910
the divorce was finalized in July of 1997. So let's

263
00:19:04.950 --> 00:19:09.920
go into his fifth wife, Frances Randolph. Now, that marriage

264
00:19:10.000 --> 00:19:14.619
began while he was still involved with his fourth wife

265
00:19:14.700 --> 00:19:18.720
that I just told you about and ended sadly with

266
00:19:18.759 --> 00:19:23.160
her death in a hospital in April of 2004 after

267
00:19:23.220 --> 00:19:27.619
a heart surgery. Now, her death was never criminally investigated,

268
00:19:27.700 --> 00:19:31.450
but family members have long suspected foul play in that.

269
00:19:31.940 --> 00:19:36.730
Randolph has attributed it to medical malpractice and so much

270
00:19:36.789 --> 00:19:41.049
so that he actually collected life insurance proceeds from this

271
00:19:41.210 --> 00:19:44.940
fifth wife as well as a settlement from the hospital. Now,

272
00:19:45.009 --> 00:19:47.710
as I said, these two met while he was still

273
00:19:48.009 --> 00:19:52.539
married to Gayna Allman. and while Frances was married to

274
00:19:52.599 --> 00:19:56.559
another man. He somehow convinces her to leave her husband.

275
00:19:57.250 --> 00:20:01.589
And they get married in August of 1997. Now, Frances

276
00:20:01.650 --> 00:20:06.119
did have a lifelong heart condition that required a lot

277
00:20:06.140 --> 00:20:10.440
of medical attention. And Randolph would encourage her to undergo

278
00:20:10.559 --> 00:20:15.470
corrective surgery. And according to her sister, Carolyn... helped select

279
00:20:15.549 --> 00:20:19.170
the doctor who performed it. So in April of 2004,

280
00:20:19.170 --> 00:20:23.609
Frances undergoes a heart procedure. Family members have said the

281
00:20:23.690 --> 00:20:29.880
surgery initially appeared successful, that she seemed stable afterward in recovery,

282
00:20:30.279 --> 00:20:33.359
and that Randolph was the last person known to see

283
00:20:33.420 --> 00:20:39.509
her alive. Shortly afterward, Her condition deteriorated, and she died

284
00:20:39.730 --> 00:20:43.230
in the hospital. Now, some key points from family members.

285
00:20:43.630 --> 00:20:48.269
One particular family member alleged Randolph restricted family access and

286
00:20:48.289 --> 00:20:53.240
would not allow her, in particular, into the room to

287
00:20:53.380 --> 00:20:56.619
see her mother after the procedure. And that's right. I

288
00:20:56.640 --> 00:21:01.369
said mother. This was her daughter. Family members were initially

289
00:21:01.450 --> 00:21:04.950
told she was doing fine, then received word of a

290
00:21:05.029 --> 00:21:10.789
sudden downturn, and her body was cremated within approximately 24 hours,

291
00:21:11.430 --> 00:21:16.769
which prevented an autopsy or independent forensic examination. And they

292
00:21:16.809 --> 00:21:20.130
just found it strange. Like, what's the rush? Now, it's

293
00:21:20.150 --> 00:21:23.779
important to mention no criminal investigation treated the death as

294
00:21:23.839 --> 00:21:30.119
a possible homicide. and hospital records reflected complications following surgery

295
00:21:30.259 --> 00:21:35.880
on a patient with pre-existing cardiac issues. Again, the motive

296
00:21:36.369 --> 00:21:40.049
a little bit suspicious here. Randolph did collect proceeds from

297
00:21:40.109 --> 00:21:43.750
a life insurance policy. He also sued the hospital, as

298
00:21:43.769 --> 00:21:46.670
I said, and he got money from that. Ever since,

299
00:21:46.789 --> 00:21:50.799
he has always denied wrongdoing, which you would expect. Now,

300
00:21:51.039 --> 00:21:55.980
in a really crazy chain of events... Family later found

301
00:21:56.119 --> 00:22:01.369
a VHS tape that Frances had recorded as a video will.

302
00:22:02.009 --> 00:22:05.630
And on it, she stated her wishes that Randolph inherit

303
00:22:05.670 --> 00:22:08.930
her assets. And you can hear Randolph on the recording

304
00:22:08.990 --> 00:22:12.430
of the video, and he appears to be almost coaching her.

305
00:22:13.000 --> 00:22:16.380
as to what to say. Now, she had also written

306
00:22:16.400 --> 00:22:19.740
a letter, which y'all, that is a lot of steps

307
00:22:19.819 --> 00:22:23.509
to make to let people know your wishes, right? It

308
00:22:23.549 --> 00:22:28.869
was read aloud in court years later in another case,

309
00:22:29.289 --> 00:22:31.660
and I want you to hear it. Listen to this.

310
00:22:34.250 --> 00:22:36.230
I am writing this because I am getting very nervous

311
00:22:36.289 --> 00:22:40.829
about my surgery. I already did a video, Will, a

312
00:22:40.890 --> 00:22:42.789
few years ago, but I thought it would be a

313
00:22:42.829 --> 00:22:44.730
good idea to do this to explain what I want

314
00:22:44.809 --> 00:22:46.210
in the event I do not make it through my

315
00:22:46.230 --> 00:22:49.420
heart surgery. Actually, Tom is typing it for me because

316
00:22:49.500 --> 00:22:52.299
everyone knows I can't work the computer very well. I

317
00:22:52.339 --> 00:22:54.460
think all our insurance is already in Tom's or his

318
00:22:54.519 --> 00:22:57.279
mom's names. I don't really have anything of real value

319
00:22:57.440 --> 00:22:59.380
because I never did have that much from being with

320
00:22:59.440 --> 00:23:01.500
Jesse all those years and what little I did get

321
00:23:01.519 --> 00:23:04.220
with Spetland Lawyers a long time ago. I want Tom

322
00:23:04.240 --> 00:23:07.079
to have everything. Everything was Tom's already or his parents

323
00:23:07.099 --> 00:23:08.990
gave it to us or we bought it together after

324
00:23:09.029 --> 00:23:11.210
we were together and we should have it. I have

325
00:23:11.250 --> 00:23:13.390
always wanted everything to go to Tom because he will

326
00:23:13.410 --> 00:23:15.190
take care of everything for me and Rachel like he

327
00:23:15.230 --> 00:23:15.690
always does.

328
00:23:16.309 --> 00:23:17.029
I may have some.

329
00:23:16.950 --> 00:23:19.349
Old insurance at the Masonic home but I'm not sure

330
00:23:19.369 --> 00:23:22.150
I still do because I quit. I got some retirement

331
00:23:22.190 --> 00:23:23.849
papers that I was going to fill out but they

332
00:23:23.869 --> 00:23:27.269
told me I couldn't get it until I was 65

333
00:23:27.269 --> 00:23:28.890
and I don't get it if I die before that.

334
00:23:29.470 --> 00:23:31.230
Tom says he thinks I should get a little bit

335
00:23:31.250 --> 00:23:34.029
because he will from his retirement and he hasn't worked

336
00:23:34.089 --> 00:23:36.230
as long as I did. If I do get something

337
00:23:36.289 --> 00:23:38.410
it should go to Tom anyway because he is my

338
00:23:38.430 --> 00:23:40.579
husband and he will be taking care of everything for

339
00:23:40.599 --> 00:23:43.299
me and Rachel. I have always and still do want

340
00:23:43.319 --> 00:23:46.190
Tom to raise Rachel. We have talked about this many times,

341
00:23:46.289 --> 00:23:48.730
and this is what Rachel wants too. I know Jesse

342
00:23:48.829 --> 00:23:50.549
and Jay will try to get Rachel, but that is

343
00:23:50.569 --> 00:23:51.009
not what I.

344
00:23:51.009 --> 00:23:51.710
Want for Rachel.

345
00:23:51.950 --> 00:23:53.690
I have never stopped fighting them to keep them from

346
00:23:53.730 --> 00:23:55.710
getting Rachel, because if they get Rachel, she will end

347
00:23:55.799 --> 00:23:57.819
up just like Jay or worse, and that is no

348
00:23:57.859 --> 00:24:00.200
way for anyone to live. I have told my sisters

349
00:24:00.240 --> 00:24:02.099
this is what I want, and I know Rachel will

350
00:24:02.119 --> 00:24:04.380
be better off and happier with Tom because she has

351
00:24:04.420 --> 00:24:07.440
been with him a lot longer than with them, and

352
00:24:07.460 --> 00:24:09.460
she really thinks of Tom as her dad. I know

353
00:24:09.480 --> 00:24:12.480
Tom will keep fighting for Rachel for me. I want

354
00:24:12.500 --> 00:24:14.619
to be cremated and be buried with Tom when he dies.

355
00:24:15.019 --> 00:24:17.079
Tom knows what I want done at my funeral, and

356
00:24:17.140 --> 00:24:18.740
I know he will take care of me and dine

357
00:24:18.799 --> 00:24:22.319
like he always did in life. I already told Tom

358
00:24:22.339 --> 00:24:24.299
what things I want to go to him and Rachel.

359
00:24:24.380 --> 00:24:26.289
He also knows what personal things I want to go

360
00:24:26.309 --> 00:24:28.970
to my brothers and sisters. I am very worried that

361
00:24:29.009 --> 00:24:30.769
something is going to go wrong this time, but I

362
00:24:30.829 --> 00:24:33.029
also know if I don't get this done soon, I

363
00:24:33.069 --> 00:24:35.549
may not get another chance. I am so happy that

364
00:24:35.589 --> 00:24:37.309
I met Tom, and he is here to take care

365
00:24:37.349 --> 00:24:39.569
of me and Rachel. I love Tom and Rachel more

366
00:24:39.589 --> 00:24:41.910
than I ever thought I could love anyone. I also

367
00:24:41.950 --> 00:24:44.009
love his mom and dad and grandkids just like they

368
00:24:44.049 --> 00:24:46.730
were my own. I guess really they are. Tommy, you

369
00:24:46.769 --> 00:24:48.450
know that I love you more than anything and you

370
00:24:48.490 --> 00:24:50.730
make me happy. You will always be my knight in

371
00:24:50.779 --> 00:24:53.640
shining armor. I wouldn't change our time together for anything.

372
00:24:54.000 --> 00:24:56.539
Remember what you promised me. Make sure you kiss Rachel

373
00:24:56.579 --> 00:24:58.640
and stay with me for me. Your friends is forever

374
00:24:58.700 --> 00:25:02.480
friends to me and all. Have you had conversations with

375
00:25:02.519 --> 00:25:04.839
your mom or have your aunts had conversations of where

376
00:25:04.859 --> 00:25:06.880
you were to go if your mother had passed?

377
00:25:07.299 --> 00:25:10.559
Yeah, whenever my mom was in the hospital, she had

378
00:25:10.579 --> 00:25:12.680
told my aunt that she didn't want me to be

379
00:25:12.720 --> 00:25:13.759
with my dad, Jesse.

380
00:25:14.599 --> 00:25:16.559
That she did want you to be? Yes, ma'am. And

381
00:25:16.599 --> 00:25:19.759
that she did not want Tom to have you? Yes, ma'am.

382
00:25:19.819 --> 00:25:25.319
Do you have concerns regarding the legitimacy or the authenticity

383
00:25:25.339 --> 00:25:26.259
that your mother.

384
00:25:26.019 --> 00:25:26.920
Actually wrote this letter?

385
00:25:27.440 --> 00:25:27.900
Yes, ma'am.

386
00:25:28.660 --> 00:25:32.940
I mean, to me? That just seems very weird, the

387
00:25:33.000 --> 00:25:36.869
way that was written. And get this, also years later,

388
00:25:37.289 --> 00:25:42.329
remember Glenn Morrison, that former associate who also spoke about

389
00:25:43.109 --> 00:25:48.339
a job, a murder-for-hire job that Randolph offered to him

390
00:25:48.819 --> 00:25:53.920
regarding Gayna Allman? Well, he testified that Randolph had once

391
00:25:53.980 --> 00:25:58.599
approached him about killing Francis in a staged burglary. In

392
00:25:58.680 --> 00:26:01.839
that account, Randolph was to be shot in the leg,

393
00:26:02.079 --> 00:26:05.210
so he would appear to also be a victim. But

394
00:26:05.269 --> 00:26:10.109
Morrison said he refused that job as well. He just

395
00:26:10.190 --> 00:26:14.230
looked at Randolph as a backstabber in his mind. So

396
00:26:14.289 --> 00:26:16.809
let's go back to the crime I told you about

397
00:26:17.009 --> 00:26:19.130
at the start of this one, which is that home

398
00:26:19.170 --> 00:26:23.319
invasion where Randolph shot an intruder and killed him after

399
00:26:23.359 --> 00:26:26.339
his wife Sharon had been killed. Now, Sharon was the

400
00:26:26.519 --> 00:26:31.940
sixth wife. She was a divorced cosmetologist with an adult

401
00:26:32.079 --> 00:26:35.740
daughter by the name of Colleen, and she met Randolph

402
00:26:35.880 --> 00:26:41.140
on Match.com in 2005. Be careful of those apps, y'all.

403
00:26:41.500 --> 00:26:44.750
That's good. That's a good reason right there, this story.

404
00:26:45.150 --> 00:26:49.150
The relationship moved quickly. They married on a cruise in

405
00:26:49.269 --> 00:26:53.470
Mexico in 2006, and they renewed their vows in Las

406
00:26:53.529 --> 00:26:58.799
Vegas in 2007, and they lived in the Las Vegas area. Now,

407
00:26:58.839 --> 00:27:04.160
within months of that marriage, Sharon updates her will to

408
00:27:04.220 --> 00:27:08.519
leave most of her assets to who do you think? Randolph.

409
00:27:09.170 --> 00:27:12.019
even though she had an adult daughter. And it's also

410
00:27:12.059 --> 00:27:16.119
at that time that he takes out multiple life insurance policies,

411
00:27:16.559 --> 00:27:23.720
roughly totaling between $ 300, 000 and $ 360, 000. The marriage was described

412
00:27:23.759 --> 00:27:28.960
as rocky. Sharon was reportedly discussing divorce around the time

413
00:27:29.000 --> 00:27:32.940
of her death. And later, while they were still married,

414
00:27:33.039 --> 00:27:38.630
and unbeknownst to Thomas Randolph, she secretly changed her will

415
00:27:39.130 --> 00:27:41.819
to give almost everything to her daughter. Now on the

416
00:27:41.970 --> 00:27:45.359
evening of May 8th of 2008, as I told you,

417
00:27:45.500 --> 00:27:48.519
they go out for a Mother's Day dinner at a

418
00:27:48.579 --> 00:27:53.140
Las Vegas casino. They return home and Randolph's account was

419
00:27:53.240 --> 00:27:56.640
Sharon entered that house and he was parking the car,

420
00:27:56.900 --> 00:28:00.940
which that bothered me from the beginning because normally if

421
00:28:00.980 --> 00:28:03.759
you're going to park the car, You're going to stay

422
00:28:03.779 --> 00:28:05.819
together and you're going to walk in the house together.

423
00:28:05.859 --> 00:28:08.019
You're going to let your wife walk in the house

424
00:28:08.180 --> 00:28:12.000
by herself? Just seemed really strange. He said he parked

425
00:28:12.019 --> 00:28:14.700
the car. She went ahead and went inside. He then

426
00:28:14.779 --> 00:28:18.240
found her shot dead in the hallway, encountered a masked

427
00:28:18.329 --> 00:28:22.529
intruder whom he shot and killed in self-defense. As I said,

428
00:28:22.589 --> 00:28:26.740
that intruder was Michael Miller. a handyman that Randolph knew

429
00:28:26.980 --> 00:28:30.750
and had been in frequent contact with. Now, prosecutors allege

430
00:28:30.829 --> 00:28:34.490
Randolph hired Miller to kill Sharon in a staged home

431
00:28:34.549 --> 00:28:38.490
invasion so that Randolph could collect the life insurance, then

432
00:28:38.589 --> 00:28:43.759
double-crossed and killed Miller to eliminate the witness. And supporting

433
00:28:43.920 --> 00:28:47.799
evidence that they had included phone records, Miller's statements to

434
00:28:47.940 --> 00:28:52.490
family about coming into money and about being paid to

435
00:28:52.549 --> 00:28:58.990
kill someone's wife and forensic inconsistencies with Randolph's story. Also

436
00:28:59.230 --> 00:29:02.279
the will arrangements, how she changed that back to her

437
00:29:02.319 --> 00:29:05.980
daughter indicated there were problems likely in that marriage. So

438
00:29:06.059 --> 00:29:11.400
Randolph does get charged in early 2009 with two counts

439
00:29:11.480 --> 00:29:15.450
of murder with a deadly weapon and conspiracy to commit murder,

440
00:29:15.490 --> 00:29:22.470
because although police initially thought this was self-defense, one singular detective,

441
00:29:22.539 --> 00:29:26.359
he looked into the past of Thomas Randolph, and that

442
00:29:26.660 --> 00:29:31.380
is when he discovered everything I just told you about today.

443
00:29:31.940 --> 00:29:35.869
And he thought, there is no way one guy is

444
00:29:35.869 --> 00:29:39.109
gonna have this much bad luck where he gets married

445
00:29:39.190 --> 00:29:42.450
to six women and four of them end up dead

446
00:29:42.890 --> 00:29:46.500
so after years of delays and i'm talking eight years

447
00:29:46.539 --> 00:29:52.559
y'all randolph is convicted in 2017 and sentenced to death

448
00:29:53.079 --> 00:29:58.210
but get this The Nevada Supreme Court overturned that conviction

449
00:29:58.259 --> 00:30:02.480
in 2020. They ruled that evidence that was brought in

450
00:30:02.539 --> 00:30:08.539
at the trial, specifically about Becky Galt, was unduly prejudicial,

451
00:30:08.660 --> 00:30:12.660
basically saying bringing it up in this case made the

452
00:30:12.740 --> 00:30:18.420
jury prejudice against the defendant because it wasn't directly related

453
00:30:18.480 --> 00:30:21.519
to this case. I know that's hard to understand. But

454
00:30:21.559 --> 00:30:24.299
that is a law pretty much in every state. So

455
00:30:24.339 --> 00:30:27.680
a mistrial is declared by the Supreme Court and they

456
00:30:27.720 --> 00:30:30.829
have to retry the case all over again. That was

457
00:30:30.930 --> 00:30:35.730
done in 2023. But Randolph, Thomas Randolph, he could not

458
00:30:35.829 --> 00:30:39.869
run far and he was convicted yet again. And in

459
00:30:39.970 --> 00:30:44.140
April 2024, he is sentenced to 60 years to life

460
00:30:44.859 --> 00:30:48.740
and he's appealed several times and That didn't go anywhere.

461
00:30:48.880 --> 00:30:53.980
And he is serving the sentence at Lovelock Correctional Center. Now, Randolph,

462
00:30:54.079 --> 00:31:00.059
not surprisingly, has been consistent maintaining his innocence and claiming self-defense.

463
00:31:00.519 --> 00:31:03.460
I'm going to say bullshit on that personally. So to

464
00:31:03.509 --> 00:31:06.619
sum all this up, six marriages and only two of

465
00:31:06.690 --> 00:31:10.670
those exes, if you will, are still alive. Catherine Thomas

466
00:31:10.930 --> 00:31:15.930
and Gayna Allman, both still alive, both testified against him.

467
00:31:16.710 --> 00:31:17.109
Deaths.

468
00:31:17.660 --> 00:31:23.230
Becky was ruled a suicide. Leona was cancer years after

469
00:31:23.329 --> 00:31:25.990
the divorce. I don't think he had anything to do

470
00:31:26.029 --> 00:31:31.700
with that. Francis was post-surgery. That's kind of 50-50 for me.

471
00:31:32.539 --> 00:31:37.069
I thought she probably died during that surgery because he

472
00:31:37.109 --> 00:31:40.109
did collect a settlement from the hospital, which means they're

473
00:31:40.789 --> 00:31:43.769
not necessarily admitting guilt, but they're paying you saying they

474
00:31:43.809 --> 00:31:46.930
had some responsibility in that. And I don't think they

475
00:31:46.970 --> 00:31:49.150
would do that if there was any chance he had

476
00:31:49.369 --> 00:31:52.880
anything to do with it. But man, when I heard

477
00:31:53.119 --> 00:31:55.980
the lengths he went through to make sure he gets

478
00:31:56.180 --> 00:32:00.640
everything upon her death, that made me think maybe he

479
00:32:00.700 --> 00:32:03.220
did have something to do with it. We'll never know.

480
00:32:03.240 --> 00:32:09.029
Sharon Of course, he was convicted of killing her and

481
00:32:09.109 --> 00:32:12.130
conspiracy to kill her. And throughout all of this, y'all,

482
00:32:12.369 --> 00:32:21.960
everything sounded similar. Rapid relationships, life insurance policies, controlling, psychologically abusive,

483
00:32:22.440 --> 00:32:25.859
allegations that he would go to people and say, I

484
00:32:26.039 --> 00:32:28.500
want to hire you to kill my wife. In all

485
00:32:28.519 --> 00:32:32.569
of these cases, Guy is an absolute nutcase. And you

486
00:32:32.609 --> 00:32:36.309
may wonder where he's at today. He's 71 years old.

487
00:32:36.690 --> 00:32:41.039
He is still in that prison, Lovelace Correctional in Nevada.

488
00:32:41.480 --> 00:32:44.779
It's a medium security prison. And I guess the only

489
00:32:44.839 --> 00:32:48.519
reason he's in a medium security prison is he's 71

490
00:32:48.519 --> 00:32:51.480
years old. And I found it interesting. It opened in

491
00:32:51.519 --> 00:32:58.089
the mid 90s and it remained relatively low profile until 2008.

492
00:32:58.089 --> 00:33:03.069
when a former NFL star named OJ Simpson was transferred

493
00:33:03.130 --> 00:33:07.259
there after his conviction in Las Vegas for armed robbery

494
00:33:07.619 --> 00:33:12.660
involving sports memorabilia. If you remember that case, he actually

495
00:33:12.740 --> 00:33:16.599
tried to hold someone up. He said they stole a

496
00:33:16.660 --> 00:33:19.720
bunch of autographed helmets that he had autographed from him,

497
00:33:19.859 --> 00:33:21.900
and he was trying to get them back. But instead

498
00:33:21.920 --> 00:33:24.099
of going to police and doing it the proper way,

499
00:33:24.569 --> 00:33:26.730
He goes to the hotel room, pulls a gun, and

500
00:33:26.769 --> 00:33:29.849
takes all the memorabilia. It's true that it all had

501
00:33:29.890 --> 00:33:33.769
his autograph on it. But you know what? Sometimes what

502
00:33:34.029 --> 00:33:37.819
comes around goes around with OJ. And that is likely

503
00:33:37.859 --> 00:33:42.920
what happened there. Now, Simpson was released from Lovelace the

504
00:33:43.000 --> 00:33:47.140
same year that Randolph was sent there. So there's no

505
00:33:47.200 --> 00:33:51.089
reporting if they ever crossed paths. But I found it

506
00:33:51.250 --> 00:33:54.369
interesting that at least at one point, they were likely

507
00:33:54.450 --> 00:33:57.230
in there at the same time, at least for a

508
00:33:57.269 --> 00:33:59.890
little while. So there you have it. That is this

509
00:34:00.009 --> 00:34:04.410
week's edition of 50 Shades of Evil. Thank you so

510
00:34:04.450 --> 00:34:08.539
much for listening. Check out the Patreon again, patreon.com slash

511
00:34:08.619 --> 00:34:13.559
bloodyangola podcast for commercial free early release episodes and more.

512
00:34:14.039 --> 00:34:17.179
And until next time, for Bloody Angola, I'm your host,

513
00:34:17.219 --> 00:34:18.900
Jim Chapman. Much love.

514
00:34:34.719 --> 00:34:39.679
I walk a straight line, shackled chain.

515
00:34:41.699 --> 00:34:45.679
Old Goose and Gertie.

516
00:34:44.840 --> 00:34:46.679
Is calling my name.

517
00:34:48.119 --> 00:34:55.949
There is no mercy in this penitentiary. Just ask the

518
00:34:55.989 --> 00:35:02.650
hill string gang, a wrangle of three. I'm here for

519
00:35:08.590 --> 00:35:13.150
Inside these walls, inside the wild.
