1:31 Hey everyone and welcome back to Bloody Angola and another Fifty Shades of Evil episode. Today I'm going to bring you back to a horrific event and it starts with music and a parade. Now before the barricades were nothing but painted wood and good intentions, there were kids dancing. baseball jerseys, grandmothers in sequined dresses. Before a red Ford Escape became evidence, it was just a car on a Sunday in suburban Wisconsin. In Waukesha, Wisconsin was doing what it had done for decades, lining Main Street for Christmas. So let's go to November 21st of 2021. It's late afternoon.

2:15 It's getting dark, but it's not quite dark yet. In the 58th annual Waukesha Christmas Parade is rolling the way a small American city wants the holiday to roll, right? Food, bands, folding chairs, people who knew each other by first name. But at 4.39 p.m., that ordinary afternoon ended. An SUV drove through the route and it didn't stop. Six people would die. More than 60 more would be hurt. 18 of the injured were children ages 3 to 16. 10 of those children went into intensive care. Three sets of siblings died. were among the wounded. One of those siblings, an eight-year-old boy marching with his baseball team and his 12-year-old brother, wouldn't even survive the week. And the man behind the wheel of that vehicle was Daryl Edward Brooks Jr.

3:13 What led to this, and why did no one see the warning signs of this evil act? That's what we're going to cover today, so let's get into it. And as I told you, February 21st, 1982, Daryl Edward Brooks Jr. Is born. Now, the childhood that follows is in Milwaukee. He grows up in a house ran by women. His mother is Dawn Woods. She's a Christian woman with Southern roots. Relatives on that side even include ministers. He has an older sister. And there's not in any reliable sense, a father in the daily work of raising him. He did have a father, obviously.

3:54 He was an alcoholic. And this was a problem in many generations of that family. As a matter of fact, they would describe it as being in the male bloodline later on. The family struggled and lived on welfare for most of his childhood, and Daryl's mother worked two jobs because... One of the adults, being the father in this story, had chosen not to. Now Dawn would say later it was a loving house. She would say her son did not come from a bad family. What she will never say is that the father stayed and got sober because he did not. He did not stay and he did not get sober. And young Daryl watched that. Now, around 11, his grandmother dies. And later, Daryl would claim he went into a deep depression. What doctors called in the mid 1990s manic depression or bipolar disorder. And at 12 years old, Daryl is admitted to a mental hospital. He's put on medication.

4:53 He attempts suicide more than once, and he also struggled in school. Now, Milwaukee in those years where he lived, pretty tough neighborhood, full of drugs, full of prostitution. And he would later say that many of the boys around him would never see 18, either having been killed or If they saw 18, they were already in jail. So by the middle of the 90s, a medical file already existed with his mental state. But a criminal file did not exist, at least until his junior year of high school. He's 17 at that time. He gets into a fight. He pulls out a knife and he actually slashes a man's face, which of course would lead to his arrest.

5:37 An eventual sentence to six months in jail. He then gets released and he's placed on 18 months of probation. Now at this point, he is 18 years old. Then in 2002, another arrest in Milwaukee County, this time for possession of THC. He pleads guilty. He gets 50 days in jail with work release and he gets his driver's license suspended for six months. In 2003, again in Milwaukee County, he gets arrested, this time for resisting and obstructing an officer, and he gets 20 more days in jail. In February of 2005, on his 23rd birthday in Manitowoc County, he is charged with obstruction, and he fails to appear in court, so a bench warrant gets issued. In that same year, he also gets a disorderly conduct ticket doesn't pay the fine, and so he serves yet another 30 days in jail. Daryl, pretty aware that the police in Wisconsin and the courts in Wisconsin are catching on to him, he leaves Wisconsin.

6:47 and he heads to Reno, Nevada, looking for a fresh start. So let's go to September 28th of 2006. He's 24 at this time, and police arrest him in what's known as Sparks, Wisconsin. The charge is statutory sexual seduction in contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a 15-year-old girl. He apparently got this girl pregnant, and he tells the police what you would expect him to tell the police. He said he thought she was older. He said she had him fooled and that she should be an actress. He said he did not know until she was pregnant how old she was and that she withheld her age because she knew that he wouldn't have stayed. So going into 2007, he is convicted of that sex offense with a minor and he's required to register as a sex offender.

7:41 And the court tells him to stay away from the victim forever. but he doesn't stay away. Of course, he gets incarcerated, and from the county jail, he steals a phone card and calls her multiple times, Then, after his release, he actually confronts her at a bus stop. The police become aware of this, and with that stunt, he goes back to jail. So on July 9th of 2007, while still in jail in Nevada, he writes to Judge Robert Perry, and he tells this judge that he grew up with no father, he was on welfare, he had a rough start, he was beat when he was younger, just all this bullshit.

8:23 All the things you would expect to garner as much sympathy as possible. And the judge didn't buy it. He's still sitting in jail. But eventually, he does get released. But in 2009, just about a year later, Nevada marks him as what's known as noncompliant on a sex offender registry. Apparently, he did not return the annual paperwork. And the address that they had on file was no longer accurate. He had moved since that time. He also had a paternity warrant out on him due to a child that he fathered and was not paying child support. Imagine that. So he gets locked up again. And of course, He gets released again. Then on February of 2010 in Wood County, Wisconsin, a woman tells police he got in an argument with her.

9:15 He shoved her to the ground and grabbed her throat. The charges that he is charged with are strangulation and suffocation, as well as criminal damage to property and battery for this. He pleads no contest to strangulation and the other counts, they're dismissed. And he gets a whopping 90 days in jail and work release, along with three years probation for this. And the conditions of his release include counseling, prescribed medication, and no contact with the victim. And I want you to look at this. This is a pattern, right? This guy has already got a criminal record longer than most people will accrue in a lifetime, even when they're bad people.

10:00 But it's a pattern. He's figured out, I can pretty much do whatever I want, and I'm only going to get, you know, six months in jail, three months in jail. It's ridiculous, the revolving door with this guy at this time. Of course, he doesn't learn, right? Then on March 25th of 2011 in Milwaukee, he gets pulled over for a seatbelt violation. He pulls over, the policeman gets out, and then he takes off as the policeman's getting out. The policeman was actually in front of him, not behind him at the stop. The policeman claims Brooks attempted to run over him, and that leads to a resisting arrest and obstruction charge. Probably should have been an attempted murder charge if you ask me. But for that, he gets a whopping 37 days in jail. That's it for trying to run over a police officer. The rest of 2011 and early 2012, even more arrest, possession of THC again, misdemeanor bail jumping, more THC, sentences of 180 days at a time for these, and he's just in and out constantly.

11:09 He writes to a judge on the child support issues he was having, and get this, He writes that the reason he cannot pay child support is because he keeps getting incarcerated. He said that's why the money's not there. Now, imagine that. This dude is blaming the fact that he cannot pay child support on the fact that he keeps breaking the law and getting caught. You can't make that shit up. So eventually he's released again. And on November of 2012, Nevada runs a sex offender sweep. Officers go to the last address that Brooks gave them. And it's a vacant lot inside a mobile home park. The property manager puts it in writing. He is not a resident.

11:57 He has never been a resident in the registry, which is supposed to be kind of a leash for him so they can keep tabs on him. The address he had not only didn't exist at the time, it never existed. Now, what the police didn't know is he was not even in Nevada anymore. He was back in in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. But this guy, he sucks at being a criminal, if you ain't figured that out, and it's not long before he is arrested again in Milwaukee, and he's charged with failing to register, failing to tell Nevada that he moved, and he posts bail, but he does not go back to court, and a warrant is issued. And five years later, he was still not picked up for that warrant. So let's go to July 24th of 2020. This is in Milwaukee, and he's living with his mother and his nephew at the time. Now, he and his nephew, they get in a fight over a cell phone. Nephew leaves with a friend, and Daryl walks into the front yard with a gun.

13:03 And as his nephew is leaving with this friend, he fires at them. Police... Get called. They find Brooks at the house. He's on an air mattress. And right near where he was laying on that air mattress, police find a Beretta 9mm. They run that gun and figure out it's stolen. They also find three multicolored pills that test Beretta. positive for methamphetamine. So detectives take him back to the station. They interview him and he blames his son for the stolen guns. He also offers to become an informant for those drug pills that he had, that methamphetamine. And he says, look, if I can avoid being locked up, I'll tell you who sold me all that. He's ready to sell everybody out.

13:50 The police, they're not interested. They charge him with two counts of second-degree reckless endangering safety while armed and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon. Cash bail was set at $ 10, 000, and of course, he ain't got that. So he sits in jail. Now, in August of 2020, that bail, for whatever reason, is adjusted down to $ 7, 500. But that's cool. That's okay, because he ain't got $ 7, 500 either. So he remains in jail, which is the best place for this guy. And in February of 2021, the state, they're ready for trial. But the defense was not.

14:31 And for reasons I don't think Anyone knows his bail gets cut again, this time to just $ 500. So you went from $ 10, 000 to $ 500 and he's able to post that $ 500 bail and he walks out of that 2020 gun case on bond. So let's go to late May of 2021. He's in Union City, Georgia. He's at what's known as Country Hearth Inn, and he's there with a girlfriend and a person in the next room. Just another patron. They didn't know this guy. They hear an argument through the wall between Brooks and his girlfriend. They also hear what they determined as punching. a male punching a female inside of this room. So this guy in the next room, he confronts, he goes and bangs on the door and he confronts Brooks. The police get called, but it's just a misdemeanor battery charge. So he's released, and he's not George's problem for long. He goes back to Wisconsin. Now, about six months later, in November of 2021, in Milwaukee at a gas station, more issues arrive. Brooks gets into an argument and punches his then-girlfriend and the mother of his child, Erica Patterson. Then he runs over her and...

16:00 in a red Ford Escape, and that's going to play a big part later on. Now, she told police she believed he was trying to kill her, and he was charged with felony second-degree reckless endangering safety. Crazy to me. He tried to run over her, and he's getting these small charges relative to what he is doing, but all this would be a key later on. You notice this is the second time he's tried to run over someone. First, the police officer, now his girlfriend. So bail gets set at a measly $ 1, 000 for this. He posts that bail. This is on November 19th of 2021, and he was released from jail. So let's go to two days later, November 21st of 2021. Brooks drives from Milwaukee to Waukesha, Wisconsin that afternoon, and he's in his mother's Ford Escape, Red Ford Escape, to meet Patterson. They argued on the phone and they messaged throughout the day, arguing with each other.

17:07 He meets her at what is known as Frame Park. Now, according to her, he punched her in the face. It leaves her eyes swollen. And he actually drove around with her in the car in this Red Escape. And he is just continuing to punch her while he's driving. He then grabs her phone out of her hand because she threatens to call the police and she jumps out of the car. He then, for whatever reason, calls her roommate, a guy named Corey. He responds to the area near Frame Park in a physical as well as a verbal confrontation followed between Brooks and this guy. The fight gets reported to police. This is around 4.30 p.m. And police would later say Brooks left that scene shortly before police arrived.

17:54 And that's important to note because he was not being chased by police. He was already gone when he reached the parade that was going on in that county. Now, that parade had started at 4 p.m. along Main Street. They had marching bands. They had what's known as the Milwaukee Dancing Grannies. They had youth sports teams. They had, you know, all the groups that you would assume would be in a parade. And about 30 minutes in, around 4.39 p.m., Brooks drives that red Ford Escape past the barricades and onto the parade route. And he is going 40 miles per hour. Witnesses and videos show him zigzagging. He's avoiding some vehicles, but he's intentionally, or what it looked like was intentionally, striking people. He continued for several blocks despite officers banging on the hood, yelling for him to stop.

18:51 One officer actually fired three shots that hit the vehicle, but not Brooks, unfortunately. Police radio captured reports of a red escape running over people. Six people. people were killed. Those six people killed were Jackson Sparks, just eight years old. He was marching with his baseball team. Jane Coolidge, who is 52. Tamara Durand, who is 52 and one of the dancing grannies. Leanna Owen, who is 71, one of the dancing grannies. Virginia Sorenson, who was 79 and one of the dancing grannies. and Wilhelm Bill Hospital, who was 81 and the husband of a dancing granny, who was also hit but survived. Dozens more were injured, some 60 people in all, including many children, and it was clear, clear by watching that video Brooks intended to strike as many people as possible, especially considering he was intentionally avoiding other cars so that his vehicle wasn't disabled. After being set off, all of this after being set off by that incident with his girlfriend. So after exiting the parade route, Brooks drives this heavily damaged SUV into an alley and he abandons it. He ditches the hoodie he was wearing and he somehow loses his shoes. They were more like sandals.

20:23 He loses those as he's running. He runs on foot through yards, a parking lot, and even a fence. Around 5.01 p.m., he reaches the home of a resident, and he claimed he was homeless and asked to use the phone to call an Uber. The guy gives him a sandwich and a jacket. I guess he called police because they arrived shortly thereafter. Officers locate him. It's around 5.14 p.m. He surrenders without a fight. And the key to that Ford Escape was found in his pocket, so there's no identifying that was his car. He was identified also through videos, numerous ones, and witnesses on the scene. And the entire sequence from entering that parade to the arrest lasted roughly 30 to 35 minutes. Two days later, he's actually charged. Now, initially, he pleads not guilty. Everybody's going to do that. You have nothing to lose, right? He later explored a not guilty by reason of insanity plea, but he withdraws that in September of 2022. Now, days before trial, his public defenders moved to withdraw from the case completely. after he insisted upon representing himself. Now, after hearings, the judge would find him competent and allow him to proceed, and they call that pro se. But this judge, she did warn that the right was not absolute and that disruptions would

21:54 have consequences in this case. So he faced 76 counts total, six first-degree homicide charges, each of those carrying a life sentence in Wisconsin, 61 counts of first degree reckless endangering safety, six hit and run causing death, and numerous other charges. And Brooks, he would use what's known as sovereign citizen style arguments throughout. Sovereign citizens stand on the fact that the government has no control over them, all those sorts of things. He stood on a lot of that. He questioned the court's subject matter jurisdiction. He objected to being called Daryl Brooks. his own freaking name, and he asked witnesses who the plaintiff was, claiming he was appearing only as a representative of Daryl Brooks. It was absolutely bizarre.

22:47 Of course, the judge ruled these arguments legally meritless and barred him from presenting them to the jury. He would interrupt constantly. He would argue with the judge. He would refuse to follow basic rules of decorum in a courtroom. He was removed from the main courtroom multiple times. And when that happened, he was placed in an adjacent room with a video slash audio feed. The judge, she would meet him and he was given a sign to hold up for objections. That's how crazy it got in this courtroom. Now, notable incidents include stripping off his shirt, putting the objection sign down his pants. building a fort of boxes and he would go on these lengthy rants. One lasted almost an hour. Prosecutors later described the behavior as an attempt to stall and intimidate. And the judge at one point said she had to manage a defendant who showed complete and utter disrespect for the simple rules of civility. More on that later. Prosecutors presented extensive video, parade footage showing the red Ford Escape zigzagging through marchers, frame park surveillance of the earlier fight that he had with his girlfriend and with that roommate, officer body cam and neighborhood cameras that tracked Brooks after he had abandoned that SUV. Officers testified about trying to stop the vehicle. The guy that

24:17 fired three shots at the SUV testified and identified Brooks as the driver. Forensic work included speed analysts from store cameras and the condition of the damaged vehicle, medical examiners, and doctors described the six tragic deaths and injuries that occurred. nearly 60 people sustained during this incident. His girlfriend testified about the assault at Frame Park that afternoon that everybody believes led to all of this. And throughout all of that, Brooks claimed a lack of intent. He actually suggested the vehicle itself malfunctioned. He called a handful of witnesses and he tried to call the state of Wisconsin and due to what he referred to as ongoing misconduct. And the judge, of course, she had had enough and she closed the defense case. And she said, you're not calling any more witnesses.

25:16 So the jury received this case late on October 25th of 2022. And after less than three hours of deliberation, and it actually started on the 25th and they had like an hour left in court. And then they deliberated two hours the next day. So on October 26th of 2022, Brooks sat quietly with his head in his hands as the judge read the 76 verdicts and he was found guilty of everything. Someone in the gallery actually shouted at him during this time and they were removed. Now, sentencing followed. This was on November 15th and 16th of 2022. And after two days of victim impact statements, the judge, she imposed six consecutive life sentences. without the possibility of parole, plus 762 years of additional confinement for the remaining charges.

26:12 And all of this was to run consecutive. So, I mean, obviously he's never getting out of jail. She described Brooks as someone who chose a path of evil, and he offered a limited apology at sentencing while still denying it. the act was intentional. Now, where is he at today? Well, Daryl Brooks is serving his sentence at the South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He is now 44, and he has been representing himself in efforts to appeal those 2022 convictions. Good luck with that. But there you have it. He'll never get out of jail. Evil, senseless killing of six and injuring of 60 plus more. And I'm going to play you a couple of clips. because it's important you hear how out of his mind this guy is. Now, first is a clip from his trial where the judge, quite honestly, had had enough of this dude in his outburst. I want you to listen to this.

27:22 Can't keep doing stuff without, it should be a fair trial. That's my right. I shouldn't be able to do things without my knowledge. And pass it off to the jury like that's fair. They deserve to know that too. The rest of you can have a seat as well. As soon as the jury's out, I'll make a record.

Reason documents are being put on the witness stand are because this court indicated it would limit the movement of the parties due to your custodial status to keep things fair. And I merely asked how did it get there? Sir, do not interrupt me or you will forfeit your right to be present in this courtroom. So you're holding me in contempt? Are you holding me in contempt? I'm going to make a record. Are you holding me in contempt? I'm not answering your questions. So then you're not holding me in contempt. Do not interrupt me again or you will go to the other courtroom.

28:45 Under what lawful law? All right, he's interrupted me once again. We're going to clear the courtroom. He's being disrespectful. I'll make a record once he moves. Unless you can promise me right now that you'll let me make my record without you interrupting. Me, sir. You going to make your record? You can make your record. Then please don't interrupt me. Don't hold me in contempt. I've never said any such thing. Removing me from the courtroom, Your Honor, is essentially holding me in contempt. All right. No, you're forfeiting your right to be present under Illinois v. Allen. I didn't forfeit anything. I'm going to start talking, and if he interrupts, then I will close this courtroom, and he will be taken to the next courtroom. Mr. Brooks, you are well aware that the court made some pretrial rulings.

29:25 Related to whether there would be... They can stay in. I haven't closed it yet. He's not interrupting me. Whether the parties could... approach the witness stand. And I did that because you're in custody and I'm not going to allow you to approach the witness stand while in custody that is why various precautions have taken place to limit frankly that from happening throughout this trial there was one instance at the very beginning of the case where I allowed the state to approach a witness and I corrected that. That hasn't happened since. We've had bailiffs take items up to the witness stand or the items have been given to the witnesses or they've been placed on the witness stand.

30:12 That's proper. There is nothing wrong about that. Nobody's trying to pull a fast one over you. No one is doing something that's not permitted by this court or, frankly, under the rules of decorum and courtesy or the presentation of evidence in this case. Frankly, from my perspective, sir, your attempts and your comments are to try to dig in at this jury and to somehow create doubt about the presentation of this case or the fairness of these proceedings without the party, meaning the state, having an opportunity to refute, explain, or correct it. I've taken the jury out at this point to admonish you that any further mumbling under your breath or not recognizing when I uphold or sustain an objection that I will take as a disrupting interruption meant to disrupt the proceedings.

31:11 I'm not holding you in contempt. I'm well aware that that's one of my options. I choose not. To do it for the reasons that I've stated on the record previously. You can forfeit your right to be present today. At any point in time during this trial by your conduct under Illinois v. Allen. When it is disruptive, when it does not. Follow the simple rules of courtesy and decorum, I draw your attention once again to SCR Chapter 62, which has been previously provided to you, which is under the statute there. These constant mumbling and interruptions during the proceedings.

Started at 9.01, then there was five at 9.02, three at 9.03, four at 9.04, one at 9.05, sorry, two at 9.05, one at 9.06, three at 9.08, again at 9.17, 9.27, 10.31, 1.05, there was talking over by you at 2.03, five interruptions at 2.14, 2.15, 2.17, at 2.19, audible muttering, 2.31, 2.33, what I would describe as inappropriate, like muttering under your breath, 2.35.

32:36 At 3.06, there was a hilarious comment. At 3.11, there was what I would describe as arguing about the muttering and the irony of it all. At 3.12, there were four interruptions. At 3.37... more 409, 410, more mumbling at 411 twice, and at 412, nine different times. So I think I've made an ample record of the disruptions today. I've been abundantly patient with you. I've, again, as I stated. Earlier, I've even limited how I tell these things to the jury about how to disregard, and I simply say the jury is to disregard comments and statements made by the parties or the lawyers as those are not evidence.

33:25 So I'm warning you, do not interrupt again. If this jury comes back or when they come back and you do that, then you will be removed and you will forfeit your right to be present for the examination of this witness. Let's bring the jury back in. Well, you might as well remove me then because what you're doing is not fair. I can't even rebut it. Which you're saying. I didn't interrupt you. I let you make your incorrect record. Mr. Brooks, I'm bringing the jury out and we're continuing. We're going to get through these witnesses. And I'm not stopping you from doing that. Through your behavior, you're not going to delay these proceedings. I'm not trying to delay the proceedings. So I wish you would stop being incorrect on the record and saying what I'm trying to do if you don't know that.

You're raising your voice. Because I'm tired of you always making a record. You're making a record of me trying to look bad. I know what you're trying to do. It's not going to work. I'm making a record of what's accurately being done. You're making a record of incorrect statements. That's what you're doing. You're not making a record of not being. Mr. Gross, I'm advising you to be quiet because the jury's coming back up. You're advising me to be quiet? Is you telling me. To be quiet? I'm advising you to be respectful when the jury comes up. Are you telling me to be quiet or are you asking me? I'm asking you and advising you. Okay, thank you for correcting that because don't nobody tell me what to do. I don't tell nobody else what to do. We're all adults in here.

Now, I saved the best for last because y'all seem to like this. So what I'm going to play in this next clip is a condensed version of the interrogation of Daryl Brooks Jr. And it is just bizarre. I'm like, what in hell? Shoulders worse than the knees, though? Absolutely. I know something is wrong. I know. I know something is wrong. What's your middle name, girl? Edward. Edward.
